Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has won the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah aged 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10" She was a center forward on her high school basketball team. in a school show, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded a demo recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
